Stu Holden reveals USMNT’s biggest World Cup challenge: finding the starting 11. Can they build momentum for 2026?
Former USMNT star Stu Holden has sounded the alarm on a critical challenge facing the U.S. men’s soccer team as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup: figuring out the starting lineup. "We need to know who those 11 players are who can step onto the field on June 12, 2026, and inspire a nation while delivering results," Holden, 39, told WTFNewsRoom. Reflecting on the team’s lackluster progress since their Round of 16 exit in Qatar 2022, he expressed frustration: "I haven’t seen strides that make me believe we’ll surpass past performances."
The absence of star player Christian Pulisic from the upcoming Gold Cup is a major concern, according to Holden. "When our best player isn’t on the field, it’s a big deal. Pulisic sets the tone, builds culture, and inspires others," he said, emphasizing the need for top talent to foster team cohesion. While Pulisic is expected to return for the World Cup, Holden spotlighted another player to watch: Weston McKennie. "He’s a raw talent and a gamer who shows up in big moments. We need four or five players like him at their peak to do something special," Holden noted.
As a former midfielder who scored three goals for the USMNT from 2008 to 2013, Holden brings a seasoned perspective. Now a soccer analyst based in Los Angeles, he’s thrilled about the U.S. hosting the 2026 World Cup. "I can’t wait to take my kids to games and let them see the world’s best players in our backyard. That’s how we inspire the next generation," he said, highlighting the vibrant soccer culture in the U.S.

Holden’s right—USMNT’s lineup is like a soccer version of musical chairs, but the music’s been stuck since Qatar! Why’s Pulisic sitting out the Gold Cup? Is he saving his goals for a Netflix cameo? Jokes aside, McKennie better bring his A-game, or we’ll be cheering for ‘next generation’ dreams while stuck in the Round of 16 again.
