Legal battles continue against doctors, hospitals, and gender clinics over gender-affirming care for minors, with advocates representing detransitioners despite Trump’s executive order and ongoing political debates.
Legal battles against doctors, hospitals, and gender clinics are forging ahead despite former President Donald Trump’s executive order pausing federal funding for the so-called "surgical mutilation" of minors. Mark Trammell, lead attorney at the Center for American Liberty, has pledged to continue representing detransitioners in their fight for justice.
Trammell highlighted the plight of young women, victimized by what he called the "gender industrial complex" as early as age 13. He pointed to cases where minors underwent double mastectomies, were prescribed puberty blockers, and off-label cross-sex hormones—all allegedly without informed consent. "These are life-altering irreversible decisions made for children who didn’t have the full picture," Trammell said.
While Trump’s executive order aimed at halting these procedures is currently under a temporary restraining order issued by a federal judge in Baltimore, some hospitals have resumed gender-affirming treatments, such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Trammell insists lawsuits against these institutions remain the most powerful tool to achieve justice, with financial damages as a potential outcome for affected individuals.
The attorney's involvement in gender-related lawsuits began with cases of social transitions in schools. Trammell highlighted examples where schools reportedly transitioned children, sometimes as young as fifth grade, without informing their parents. One case involved Aurora Regino, who discovered her daughter had been socially transitioned to male—complete with new pronouns and a male name—without her knowledge. "No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s mental or physical health," Trammell emphasized.
In addition to targeting institutions, Trammell revealed that individual doctors are being held personally accountable through lawsuits. "We’re suing doctors individually and the hospitals that employ them," he said. "These are tort cases aiming to hold those responsible for injuries directly accountable."
The Department of Education also stepped into the conversation last week, hosting six detransitioners and activists on Detrans Awareness Day to discuss the harmful effects of gender ideology in schools. New Secretary of Education Linda McMahon echoed concerns, stating, "No teacher should attempt to persuade or coerce a student to undergo a gender transition. Parents must be informed and involved." She called for stronger protections against what she described as the indoctrination of children into believing they were "born in the wrong body."
Trump, undeterred by the restraining order, is continuing his efforts to combat what his administration calls "radical gender ideology." A memo from the Department of Health and Human Services last week warned hospitals about the dangers of "chemical and surgical mutilation" of children and outlined potential policy changes to align medical practices with higher-quality evidence. The notice emphasized the long-term harm and lack of scientific support for many gender dysphoria treatments.
"In recent years, medical interventions for gender dysphoria in children have proliferated," the memo stated. "With insufficient evidence and alarming consequences, CMS may begin adjusting policies to better reflect the lack of medical justification for these treatments." The legal and political battles over this issue are far from over, but for detransitioners and their advocates, the fight for justice is just beginning.

This is one of those stories that hits hard because it’s about kids—kids who deserved better from the adults making life-altering decisions on their behalf. It’s chilling to think about 13-year-olds undergoing irreversible surgeries. The lawsuits are important not just for accountability but also for forcing institutions to rethink their practices. And while Trump’s executive order is making waves, the restraining order and hospitals reversing course show how messy and contentious this issue remains. It’s clear that the conversation around gender ideology in schools and medicine isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
