The Minnesota Vikings commit to JJ McCarthy as starting quarterback, passing on Aaron Rodgers for now, while Sam Darnold departs for the Seattle Seahawks after playoff struggles.
The Minnesota Vikings appear to have made their choice for quarterback, opting to stick with JJ McCarthy instead of chasing free-agent superstar Aaron Rodgers—for now.
According to an NFL Network report, the Vikings have turned down multiple trade inquiries about McCarthy and plan to move forward with the 2024 first-round pick as their starting quarterback. The team also intends to add a veteran quarterback to the roster but has no immediate plans to pursue Rodgers.
Meanwhile, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers have emerged as top contenders to sign the four-time MVP if he decides to play next season. Rodgers, as usual, keeps the NFL world on its toes.
McCarthy showed promise during last year’s preseason, completing 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Unfortunately, his rookie season was cut short by a torn meniscus that led to season-ending surgery in August.
With McCarthy sidelined, Sam Darnold took over as the Vikings’ starting quarterback and delivered a stellar regular season, leading the team to a 14-3 record. Darnold threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 66% of his passes. However, his performance faltered in the most critical moments. A disastrous Week 18 loss to the Detroit Lions, where Darnold completed just 18 of 41 passes for 166 yards, cost the Vikings the NFC North title and a first-round playoff bye.
Things didn’t improve in the wild-card round against the Los Angeles Rams, where Darnold was sacked nine times and struggled to make an impact. He finished the game with 245 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a 27-9 loss.
Perhaps those late-season struggles influenced Minnesota’s decision to let Darnold walk in free agency. He has since signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks, stepping into Geno Smith’s shoes as their new starting quarterback.
Now, all eyes are on head coach Kevin O’Connell, who seems ready to put his trust in McCarthy despite the quarterback’s limited NFL experience. However, the door isn’t entirely closed on Rodgers. If the Vikings decide to revisit their interest in the veteran QB, it could signal some hesitation about McCarthy’s readiness to lead the team.
For now, the Vikings’ message is clear: JJ McCarthy is their guy. Whether that gamble pays off remains to be seen.
