Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly agree to a record 14-year, $500 million extension, securing one of MLB’s brightest stars through 2038.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly agreed to a jaw-dropping 14-year contract extension worth $500 million, making waves in the baseball world early Monday morning. The team has yet to officially announce the deal, but multiple sources have confirmed the news.

Guerrero, who was set to hit free agency after the 2025 season, opted to stay loyal to the franchise that originally signed him as an amateur free agent back in 2015. His decision to stick with Toronto likely came despite the inevitable bidding war that awaited him on the open market.

The deal places him among baseball's financial elite, with the third-largest contract in MLB history. Only Juan Soto’s astronomical 15-year, $765 million agreement with the New York Mets and Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million pact with the Los Angeles Dodgers surpass Guerrero’s contract in total value.

And here's the kicker: this record-breaking deal reportedly includes no deferred payments. That's cold, hard cash upfront—an increasingly rare trend in these mega contracts.

Guerrero, the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, debuted in the majors in 2019 and has steadily built his legacy. In 2021, he led all players in home runs with a staggering 48, earning his first All-Star selection. Since then, he's been an annual presence at the All-Star Game. Last season, Guerrero rounded out the year with an impressive .323 batting average, a .940 OPS, and 30 home runs.

However, postseason play has been a different story. Guerrero's playoff stats are lackluster, with a disappointing .136 batting average and zero home runs across 22 at-bats. While Toronto fans will undoubtedly celebrate this long-term commitment, they'll hope Guerrero can elevate his postseason performance to match his regular season dominance.

Now locked in for the foreseeable future, the Blue Jays aim to push for their first World Series title since their back-to-back wins in 1992 and 1993. The team currently sits at a modest 5-5 this season, but with Guerrero leading the charge, their championship aspirations just got a lot brighter.

Guerrero's loyalty to the Blue Jays is commendable, but let’s talk about that postseason performance—yikes. With $500 million on the table, he better start swinging like his paycheck depends on it when October rolls around. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how baseball contracts are basically Monopoly money at this point?
