Voters Distrust Biden Admin on Mental Fitness, Demand Answers on Decline

A recent poll reveals a deep-seated skepticism among voters about the Biden administration’s transparency regarding the former president’s mental fitness. A striking 68% of voters, including a majority across party lines—52% of Democrats, 75% of Independents, and 81% of Republicans—believe the administration was less than forthcoming about Joe Biden’s cognitive condition. This distrust isn’t new; as early as November 2021, over half of voters felt Biden’s age hindered his performance, a sentiment that grew to 65% by July 2024.

The numbers tell a story of awareness: 68% of voters say they noticed Biden’s decline well before his faltering debate performance in June 2024. For 28%, the signs were clear from the start of his presidency, while 21% picked up on it a couple of years in, and 19% during his re-election bid. Only 9% insist there was no decline at all.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer is pushing for investigations into whether Biden’s advisors concealed his condition or used an autopen for executive actions without his full awareness. Voters are divided: 52% want Congress to probe the autopen issue, while 50% support scrutinizing advisors for making key decisions on Biden’s behalf. However, 55% oppose investigating a broader cover-up, suggesting a public ready to move forward but still grappling with lingering doubts.

Biden’s personal favorability has taken a hit, now sitting at 43% favorable versus 56% unfavorable, a stark contrast to his net-positive ratings early in his term. Even among Democrats, his approval has slipped from 95% four years ago to 75% today. The data paints a picture of an administration whose legacy is under scrutiny, with voters feeling they saw through the veil long before the headlines caught up.
