The Tennessee Titans selected Cam Ward as their new franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft, with Hall of Famer Warren Moon passing down his iconic No. 1 jersey.
The Tennessee Titans found their new franchise quarterback Thursday night, picking Miami standout Cam Ward with the first overall selection in the NFL Draft. Ward's arrival wasn't exactly a shock, but what happened at his introductory press conference on Friday certainly was.
Legendary quarterback Warren Moon—yes, the Hall of Famer himself—made a surprise entrance and, in a classy move, handed over his own retired No. 1 jersey to the rookie. Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi set the stage, telling Ward that there was a special guest waiting, and then Moon appeared, holding up the iconic jersey and passing the torch (well, the shirt) in front of the cameras.
For those who need a refresher, Moon spent a decade with the Houston Oilers, the team that would eventually become the current Titans. Over 17 NFL seasons, Moon racked up nine Pro Bowl appearances and a Hall of Fame bust. Now, the Titans are clearly hoping Ward can follow in those golden footsteps—or at least bring a few more wins than last season's record.
And speaking of last season, Ward lit it up at Miami, completing 67.2% of his passes for 4,313 yards and topping the ACC with 39 touchdown throws against just seven picks. He led the Hurricanes to a 10-3 finish, which is a stat Titans fans might want to memorize for hope.
The quarterback position in Tennessee was, let's just say, a little less inspiring last year. Will Levis, who started nine games as a rookie and showed some flashes, took a step back. The Titans limped to a 3-14 record under new head coach Brian Callahan, and Levis posted a 2-10 record in his 12 starts, with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions to his name. When your win total looks like a field goal, you know it's time for change.
With Ward now holding the No. 1 jersey—literally and symbolically—the Titans are clearly banking on him to turn the page and maybe write a little history of his own. If he can live up to even a sliver of Moon's legacy, Tennessee might just get the comeback story it's craving.

Warren Moon handing over his retired No. 1 feels like passing down Excalibur, except this time the sword is a jersey and the kingdom is, well, the AFC South. Cam Ward's got some big cleats to fill—let's just hope the Titans' O-line gives him enough time to tie them.
