Warriors guard Buddy Hield shares a hilarious disappointment at Rome’s Colosseum, expecting Gladiator’s Maximus to be real. Catch his candid take!

Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield recently shared a rather amusing take on his visit to the iconic Colosseum in Rome, and let’s just say, it wasn’t quite the epic experience he had envisioned. While in Italy for an NBA Summer League game, where the Warriors triumphed over the Utah Jazz with a 103-93 victory, Hield’s off-court commentary stole the spotlight.

During an ESPN broadcast, Hield revealed his disappointment upon learning that Maximus, the fierce protagonist from the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator, wasn’t a real historical figure. "I walked into the Colosseum screaming ‘Maximus!’ only for my tour guide to break the news that he’s just a Hollywood creation," Hield recounted with a mix of humor and disbelief. For a player known for his sharp shooting, this was one shot to the heart he didn’t see coming.

Hield also mentioned catching Gladiator 2, featuring Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, but admitted it didn’t live up to the original’s grandeur with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. It seems his expectations for cinematic sequels are as high as his standards on the court.

On the professional front, Hield is gearing up for his second season with the Warriors after joining the team in a massive six-team trade involving the Philadelphia 76ers before the 2024-25 season. Last year, he averaged 11.1 points per game with a 41.7% field goal percentage, playing in all 82 games, mostly off the bench. From his rookie days with the New Orleans Pelicans to stints with the Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers, Hield has carved out a solid career, but this Roman revelation might just be his most entertaining story yet.

Buddy Hield walking into the Colosseum yelling for Maximus is peak off-season energy. I bet he’d challenge a lion next, thinking it’s just another Hollywood prop! Honestly, isn’t it refreshing to see an athlete more crushed by a movie myth than a missed shot?
