The Washington Commanders plan a return to their historic roots with a new stadium deal at the old RFK site, pending D.C. Council approval.
Commanders Strike Deal to Return to Historic RFK Stadium Site
The Washington Commanders have officially reached an agreement with Washington, D.C. officials to build a new stadium on the iconic site of the old RFK Stadium. After decades away, the team is set to reclaim the ground where they made countless memories from 1961 to 1996. The deal still needs the green light from the D.C. City Council, but fans are already dusting off their vintage jerseys in anticipation.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the agreement, marking a potential homecoming for the franchise. Commanders executives and city officials are eager to see the team bring the energy back to D.C. The franchise even dropped a nostalgic video narrated by Super Bowl champ Joe Theismann, who declared, "The time is now. Let's bring Washington back to D.C." Hard to argue with that level of hype!
Since leaving RFK, the Commanders have played in Landover, Maryland—but new owner Josh Harris has been shopping for a fresh start ever since he took over the team. With Congressional lawmakers backing the move, there's extra momentum, especially with calls to honor the old Redskins logo. Sen. Steve Daines of Montana highlighted ongoing "good faith negotiations" that could see the logo return in a respectful way, possibly with revenues supporting Native American communities in sports. Now that’s what I call a compromise with a purpose.
Looking ahead, Harris set 2030 as a "reasonable target" for opening the new stadium. He’s also dreaming big: envisioning a future NFL Draft taking place on the National Mall, sandwiched between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Talk about a prime location—if that happens, it’s going to be selfie central for football fans.

If the Commanders pull off this stadium move and manage to host the NFL Draft on the National Mall, I fully expect the Lincoln Memorial to start sporting a foam finger. The nostalgia play here is strong—bring back the memories, but maybe leave the old stadium bathrooms in the past!
