A somber note out of West Texas this Wednesday: the first measles death has been reported amidst a growing outbreak that has already affected over 100 individuals, according to the Associated Press.

Melissa Whitfield, representing Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, confirmed the unfortunate news to AP. Details regarding the patient's identity and age remain undisclosed.

Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock has yet to release a statement following requests for comment.

As of Tuesday, the outbreak has spread across nine counties in Texas, impacting 124 people, as stated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Cases have also emerged in New Mexico, with nine confirmed infections.

The DSHS initially acknowledged the outbreak on Feb. 5. Health officials emphasize that the most effective preventive measure is receiving two doses of the measles vaccine, typically administered as the MMR immunization.

This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates.

It's truly heartbreaking to see a preventable disease like measles still claiming lives. This is a wake-up call to ensure everyone has access to vaccinations and understands their importance.
