White House slams Rep. Glenn Ivey for Memorial Day trip to visit deported MS-13 suspect, sparking heated debate over immigration priorities.

The White House unleashed a firestorm of criticism against Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., for his Memorial Day journey to El Salvador, where he attempted to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a deported individual suspected of ties to the notorious MS-13 gang. The administration labeled the trip "shameful," accusing Ivey of prioritizing a suspected criminal over American citizens. Their sharp rebuke, posted on X, read: "This moron spent his Memorial Day trying (and failing) to visit a criminal illegal immigrant gangbanger in a foreign country."

Ivey, undeterred, took to X to defend his actions, emphasizing his role as Abrego Garcia’s representative. He expressed frustration after being denied access by Salvadoran authorities, stating, "If there’s nothing to hide, cut the crap. Let his lawyer and I check on him." Ivey vowed to continue advocating for Abrego Garcia’s return, arguing that his constituent was deported without proper due process.

Abrego Garcia’s case has ignited a fierce political debate. The Trump administration points to evidence linking him to MS-13, human trafficking, and alleged domestic violence against his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, as justification for his deportation. Meanwhile, Democrats, including Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., argue that Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, deserves fair treatment and have made similar trips to El Salvador to check on his welfare.

The controversy deepened with reports of Abrego Garcia’s 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee, where a trooper suspected human trafficking after finding eight individuals in his car, with no luggage and all claiming the same address. Though no charges were filed, the incident added fuel to the administration’s narrative. White House deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson didn’t mince words, calling Ivey’s trip "an insult to the American people" and accusing Democrats of favoring "criminal illegals."

The issue has also drawn comparisons to the tragic murder of Rachel Morin, a Maryland woman killed by an undocumented immigrant in 2023. The White House highlighted Trump’s meeting with Morin’s mother, contrasting it with Democratic efforts to support Abrego Garcia, underscoring a broader clash over immigration priorities.

Rep. Ivey’s Memorial Day jaunt to El Salvador to check on a suspected MS-13 member feels like a plot twist even M. Night Shyamalan couldn’t dream up. While most folks were grilling burgers, Ivey was grilling a foreign government for access to a deported constituent. Here’s a thought: maybe next Memorial Day, he could visit a veteran’s family instead? Or is that too ‘on-brand’ for a congressman?
