Sen. Whitehouse faces backlash for comparing Sen. Padilla’s press conference removal to John Lewis’ civil rights struggles, sparking outrage over trivializing history.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse stirred controversy Thursday with a social media post juxtaposing an image of Sen. Alex Padilla’s dramatic removal from a press conference with a historic photo of Civil Rights icon John Lewis facing police brutality. The comparison sparked outrage, particularly among conservatives, who called it a disrespectful trivialization of Lewis’ legacy.

Padilla, the first Latino senator from California, was forcibly removed and handcuffed during a Department of Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, amid escalating anti-ICE protests. Whitehouse’s post drew a parallel to Lewis, who was arrested over 40 times during the Civil Rights Movement, including during the Freedom Rides and Selma marches.

‘A cheap, woke insult,’ fumed Rep. Burgess Owens, who grew up in the Jim Crow South. ‘Comparing a political stunt to the courage of the Civil Rights Movement is shameful.’ Social media echoed the sentiment, with commentators like Fox News host Lawrence Jones questioning Whitehouse’s judgment and others, including Federalist Editor Mollie Hemingway, referencing his membership in a Rhode Island sailing club criticized for lacking diversity.

Whitehouse has previously apologized for the club’s lack of inclusivity but denied any exclusionary policies. His office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The incident itself fueled bipartisan concern. Padilla’s office claims he was merely trying to ask Noem a question before being manhandled by federal agents. Video footage of the event spread rapidly, prompting Democratic lawmakers to march in protest to the offices of House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, with some, like Sen. Adam Schiff, calling for Noem’s resignation.

Republicans, however, were unsympathetic. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso accused Padilla of making ‘a spectacle of himself,’ while Sen. Bernie Moreno questioned whether a crime had been committed, pointing to Democratic hypocrisy on law enforcement issues.

The episode underscores deeper tensions over immigration policy and public protest, with Padilla’s actions and Whitehouse’s comparison igniting a firestorm that shows no signs of cooling.

Whitehouse comparing Padilla’s handcuff tango to John Lewis’ battle scars? That’s like equating a paper cut to a war wound. And tossing shade from an all-white sailing club? Bold move for a diversity lecture!
