Yankees' Aaron Boone Shares Sorrow Over Death of Brett Gardner's Teen Son: 'Very Tough News'

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed deep sorrow following the devastating news shared by former Yankees star Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, about the loss of their youngest son, Miller.

The Gardner family revealed that Miller, just 14 years old, passed away while on vacation after falling ill alongside other family members. In a statement released through the Yankees, they described their heartbreak and noted that Miller had died peacefully in his sleep on March 21. The specific location of their vacation and the cause of his illness remain unclear.

Speaking to reporters, Boone reflected on the tragedy, saying, "We talk about being family all the time, and even though Brett’s been gone for a few years, that doesn’t stop. A lot of people in there [the clubhouse] that know that family intimately. It’s a very tough day and very tough news." He emphasized that the team would keep the Gardner family in their prayers and provide support where possible, acknowledging the unimaginable grief they are facing.

Gardner, who played for the Yankees from 2008 to 2021—including under Boone’s management—shared a heartfelt statement about his son. "Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile," the family wrote. "He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family, and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day."
