Brief

Zohran Mamdani, backed by Sanders and AOC, proposes massive spending and free services in his NYC mayoral bid against Cuomo.

In a bold bid for the New York City mayoral seat, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is shaking up the race with a platform that could redefine the city’s future. Backed by heavyweights like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani, currently a state assemblyman, is challenging even the formidable former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. With ranked-choice voting in play, results won’t be immediate, but the buzz around his campaign is already deafening.

Mamdani’s vision for NYC is nothing short of revolutionary—or, depending on your perspective, financially audacious. He’s promising a slew of free services, from public transit to universal childcare for kids as young as six weeks. He’s also pitching a network of city-owned grocery stores to keep prices low, a rent freeze for over 2 million tenants, and a jaw-dropping push to raise the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030. Safety isn’t left out; he plans a Department of Community Safety with outreach workers in subways and an 800% funding boost for hate violence prevention.

Then there’s his stance on national politics. Mamdani aims to ‘Trump-proof’ NYC by bolstering its sanctuary city status, expelling ICE from city facilities, and protecting immigrant data. He’s also committed to making the city a haven for LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive freedoms. It’s a progressive wishlist that’s as ambitious as it is polarizing.

But let’s talk numbers—because the price tag on this utopia is staggering. Estimates suggest universal childcare alone could cost up to $7 billion, while free buses might drain nearly $1 billion annually from the MTA. A tripling of the city’s $30 billion housing budget is on the table, alongside other initiatives tallying hundreds of millions. To fund it, Mamdani proposes raising $10 billion through higher corporate taxes (up to 11.5%), a flat 2% tax on millionaires, and cracking down on tax evasion and corrupt landlords.

Will this fiscal gamble pay off, or is it a recipe for economic chaos in a city already stretched thin? Mamdani’s supporters see a visionary; critics, a dreamer detached from reality. As the primary unfolds, one thing is clear: NYC’s future hangs in a very expensive balance.

Mamdani’s plan to turn NYC into a free-for-all utopia sounds like a socialist Santa Claus came early. But tripling a $30 billion budget? Even Santa’s elves would strike over that math! And ‘Trump-proofing’ the city—does that come with a wall around Manhattan or just a really stern letter to ICE?
