Kurt Massimilla and his family were driving home after celebrating his son’s 13th birthday when his wife exclaimed, "An albino deer!" The sheer excitement in her tone resembled that of a giddy teenager, according to Massimilla.

The encounter took place on a quiet back road as the family returned home. Massimilla initially mistook the animals for white llamas before reversing his car to confirm their discovery. Indeed, there were two strikingly pale deer calmly hanging out in the open field, a visual that felt almost surreal.

Now, before you start imagining pink-eyed albino deer prancing across Iowa, experts suggest the animals were likely piebald deer rather than true albinos. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), piebald deer have varying amounts of white fur and normal dark eyes, unlike true albinos, which have pink eyes and are completely white.

Piebald deer are incredibly rare, accounting for less than 1% of the population. Seeing two together? That’s a statistical miracle with odds as slim as 1 in 400 million, as Massimilla himself acknowledged.

The family, originally from Arizona and self-proclaimed wildlife enthusiasts, found the sighting profoundly thrilling. "We’re big wildlife enthusiasts, so it was just kind of neat to see because we love seeing animals that you typically don’t see on the beaten trail," Massimilla said.

For those wondering, piebald deer are also known as leucistic deer, a term referring to partial loss of pigmentation that causes white patches or splotches on the skin or fur. Unlike albinism, leucism does not affect pigmentation in the eyes, which is why these animals retain their natural eye color.
