Hendrickson, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, didn’t hold back his emotions after the victory, calling it "bigger than worlds, Olympics, anything." The Olympic gold medalist had returned to the mat for the 2024 season following a year off to explore NFL and WWE opportunities.

He credits the Air Force Academy for providing him with opportunities beyond wrestling, including a world-class education and a chance to be part of something greater than himself.

"From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to make the military my career," Hendrickson explained. "I could accomplish all those [goals] at the Air Force Academy. Wrestle in the Big 12. Get a world-class education. Be part of something bigger than myself." He plans to wrestle for three more years before fully transitioning into his military career.
