Explosion at Gaomi Youdao Chemical plant in Weifang, China, kills 5, leaves 6 missing, raising concerns about industrial safety.

A devastating explosion at Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co. in Weifang, China, claimed at least five lives and left six people missing on Tuesday. The blast, powerful enough to shatter windows over two miles away, sent thick columns of smoke billowing into the sky, tinged with an eerie reddish hue. A nearby student described a pungent odor lingering in the air, prompting schools to distribute masks to children.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with 19 others reported injured. Gaomi Youdao, a major producer of pesticides and medical chemicals with over 500 employees, was lauded just months ago for addressing more than 800 safety hazards identified in 2024. Yet, this tragedy underscores the persistent risks in China’s chemical industry, coming mere weeks after a national workshop urged better management of hazardous materials.

Over 230 first responders rushed to the scene, where the devastation echoed past incidents: a 2015 Tianjin explosion that killed 173 and a 2019 Yancheng blast that claimed 78 lives. As investigations unfold, questions linger about whether safety reforms are enough to prevent these recurring tragedies.

Another chemical plant goes boom in Weifang, and it’s like Groundhog Day with hazmat suits. They fixed 800 safety hazards last year, but seems they missed the one labeled ‘don’t blow up.’ China’s chemical industry keeps playing Russian roulette with safety, and the workers are the ones losing.
