A 26-year-old Haitian migrant, Mackendy Darbouze, is facing three counts of first-degree murder in Fayetteville, North Carolina, after allegedly killing 77-year-old Beatrice Desir, a 13-year-old, and a 4-year-old. According to the Fayetteville Police Department, the tragic incident occurred on February 21 when officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence. Upon arrival, they discovered the three victims with stab wounds. Darbouze was apprehended at the scene and is currently held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center. Reports indicate that Darbouze was found with blood on his hands, face, and clothing when police arrived. Surveillance footage also allegedly shows him with a knife, which investigators later found with blood on it in his room. Here's where it gets interesting: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Darbouze arrived in the U.S. in July 2024 through President Biden’s Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) migrant flights mass parole program. He also reportedly speaks Creole, requiring ICE personnel to interview him in that language. ICE has since placed a detainer on Darbouze. The CHNV program, initiated in 2022, aimed to allow asylum seekers from these countries to be paroled into the U.S., provided they had a financial sponsor. While the Biden administration touted its success in reducing illegal border crossings, critics argue it merely shifted the point of entry to airports. Remember Jose Ibarra? He was also paroled into the U.S. under CHNV in 2022 before he attacked and killed University of Georgia Student Laken Riley. The program has faced considerable scrutiny, especially after incidents like these.

Editor's Comments

It's always a complex situation when immigration policies intersect with tragic events like this. The CHNV program, while intended to provide a legal pathway for asylum seekers, has clearly become a focal point for criticism after such high-profile incidents. It raises serious questions about vetting processes and the balance between humanitarian efforts and public safety.
