Despite the hour-long discussion, which a spokesperson described as 'constructive' and focused on key issues like affordability and public safety, Jeffries stopped short of offering his endorsement—a notable hesitation from a party heavyweight.

Mamdani, a state assemblyman, has already garnered support from progressive icons such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, and recently won over Rep. Ro Khanna after a high-profile trip to Washington, D.C. Yet, the lack of backing from top Democrats like Jeffries and Sen. Chuck Schumer raises questions about the party’s unity behind a candidate who secured the nomination by a wide margin over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The meeting touched on pressing local concerns, including rising antisemitism and gentrification, with plans for a follow-up involving other congressional and community leaders. However, Mamdani’s controversial stances—particularly his socialist policies and past reluctance to distance himself from divisive rhetoric—may be giving party leaders pause. As Mamdani campaigns to unseat Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, he also faces challenges from Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. With Jeffries playing his endorsement cards close to the chest, the road ahead for Mamdani looks anything but smooth.
