Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir admires U.S. gun laws, pushing for looser firearm restrictions in Israel to boost citizen safety after Oct. 7 attacks.
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stirred debate during a U.S. visit, where he explored America’s gun culture and advocated for looser firearm laws in Israel. Meeting with Republican lawmakers and Jewish groups, Ben-Gvir praised the accessibility of weapons in the U.S., calling it a model for Israel to consider.
"I was struck by the sheer variety of firearms available," Ben-Gvir said, reflecting on visits to a shooting range and gun store. He believes expanding gun ownership could enhance security, especially after the Oct. 7 attacks exposed vulnerabilities in Israel’s defenses.
Ben-Gvir’s push for broader gun access isn’t new, but it’s gained traction since the attacks. Reforms he championed have eased restrictions, allowing more citizens, including national service members, to apply for permits. "A gun in a citizen’s pocket means safety," he argued, pointing to civil defense squads near Gaza as proof of his strategy’s success.
His U.S. trip wasn’t without friction. Protesters clashed with the minister, whose right-wing past fuels his polarizing reputation. Yet, Ben-Gvir found a warm reception at Mar-a-Lago and among GOP figures like Rep. Brian Mast, a veteran with ties to Israel’s security forces.
While Ben-Gvir sees America’s gun policies as a blueprint, he acknowledges limits. "I wouldn’t go as far as the U.S.," he noted, but insisted that armed citizens are key to Israel’s resilience. As tensions persist, his vision for a more armed populace continues to spark fierce debate.

Ben-Gvir’s gun enthusiasm makes you wonder if he’s planning a Wild West showdown in the Negev. Joking aside, arming more citizens might feel empowering, but it’s a gamble when tensions are already hotter than a Gaza summer. What’s next, issuing slingshots to tourists?
