Top aide to Jill Biden pleads Fifth in House probe over alleged cover-up of Joe Biden's mental decline. Investigation heats up with more subpoenas.
In a stunning turn of events, Anthony Bernal, a top aide to former First Lady Jill Biden, invoked the Fifth Amendment during a closed-door deposition with the House Oversight Committee on July 16. The committee, led by Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), is digging into allegations of a potential cover-up by senior ex-White House aides regarding former President Joe Biden's mental and physical decline while in office.
Bernal, once a senior advisor and assistant to the president, dodged every question thrown at him, refusing to shed light on whether unelected officials or family members executed presidential duties or if Biden ever instructed him to mislead about his health. Comer didn’t mince words, telling reporters that 'all options are on the table'—including the possibility of hauling in the former president himself for questioning. The American public, he argued, deserves answers.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who was present at the deposition, took an even harder line, calling the situation 'corruption at the highest level.' He went so far as to suggest that if Biden wasn’t fully in charge, every order, bill, and memorandum signed during his tenure could be considered null and void. That’s a bombshell waiting to detonate.
Meanwhile, Bernal isn’t the only one clamming up. Former White House physician Kevin O’Connor also pleaded the Fifth last week, with his deposition lasting less than half an hour. His legal team claimed it wasn’t an admission of guilt but a move to protect doctor-patient confidentiality. The committee, however, isn’t buying it, pointing out that O’Connor refused to answer even basic questions unrelated to privilege.
The probe has sparked heated reactions across the aisle. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), who made an appearance at the deposition, dismissed the GOP’s efforts with a curt jab, while Comer remains steadfast in his mission to uncover the truth behind what he calls a troubling lack of transparency. With more former staffers, including ex-deputy Chief of Staff Annie Tomasini, subpoenaed to testify, this investigation is far from over.
What’s clear is that the questions surrounding Biden’s capacity—and who really held the reins—aren’t going away anytime soon. The deeper this committee digs, the murkier the waters get.

Well, folks, it seems Anthony Bernal took the Fifth so fast, he might as well have been auditioning for a silent movie role. But here’s the real question hiding in the corner: if everyone’s pleading the Fifth, who’s left to plead the truth? This isn’t just a cover-up probe; it’s starting to look like a game of White House hide-and-seek. And with Comer saying ‘all options are on the table,’ I’m betting even the presidential autopen is sweating right now.
