Karen Read, cleared of murder, may sue investigators for a botched probe that cost her jobs and home.
Karen Read, recently acquitted of murder charges in Massachusetts, may now turn the tables on those who investigated her, potentially targeting law enforcement with lawsuits for what legal experts call an incompetent and invasive probe. The ordeal cost Read her jobs and home, forcing her to sell her house to cover staggering legal fees.
"She could sue individual officers for botching the investigation and violating her privacy," said defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden. "The Massachusetts State Police and the Commonwealth could also face claims for failing to train officers properly, leading to her false arrest."
Legal analysts suggest Read may pursue a malicious prosecution case, given the mishandled investigation. The fired lead detective, Michael Proctor, didn’t help matters—caught leaking case details to civilians and mocking Read’s medical conditions, actions that could fuel privacy violation claims.
Meanwhile, Read faces a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of John O’Keefe, her late boyfriend. But she’s not just on defense—Read could countersue two Canton bars named in the O’Keefe family’s suit, arguing they served her alcohol before her alleged intoxicated driving. "The more players involved, the more insurance policies to tap," Kenney Baden noted, hinting at Read’s strategy to maximize financial recovery.
Philadelphia attorney David Gelman pointed to potential targets: local Canton police, state troopers, and even the prosecutor’s office if evidence of misconduct surfaces. But some argue the police may dodge liability, as they secured probable cause before a grand jury. Still, Read’s fight is far from over—she’s poised to seek justice for the chaos she endured.

Looks like Karen Read’s ready to flip the script—suing the cops who fumbled her case worse than a rookie quarterback on game day. And that detective leaking details? He’s got more loose lips than a gossip at a barbershop. Wonder if the bars she might sue will start serving ‘Not Guilty’ cocktails to celebrate her comeback.
