Man Ventures to 42 Remote Scottish Islands to Capture Breathtaking Scenery

Alastair Jackson, a writer and photographer, has spent the last 18 months exploring the Scottish islands, capturing mesmerizing images that showcase their rugged beauty and charm. Armed with only a camera, a tent, and a sturdy pair of walking boots, Jackson ventured to 42 remote locations to immerse himself in "island life."

Inspired by Scotland's famously unpredictable weather, dramatic light, and breathtaking landscapes, Jackson's photographs highlight the west coast's natural splendor. From the Isle of Barra to the Isle of Gigha, each destination offered him a unique adventure and insight into the lives of its inhabitants.

Jackson, who grew up on the Isle of Skye, said his upbringing instilled a deep appreciation for island culture, which he sought to explore further during this ambitious project. "When you grow up in one place, you don't really travel," Jackson remarked, explaining his motivation to visit these often-overlooked gems.

Camping overnight in each of the 42 destinations, Jackson took full advantage of the serene surroundings to capture sunrises and sunsets. The Isle of Barra, in particular, left him awestruck with its stunning light displays. Despite Scotland's reputation for rain, he was pleasantly surprised by the fair weather, stating, "It only rained one or two days."

Wildlife also played a starring role in his journey, with sightings of corncrake birds, basking sharks, and even otters stealing the show. Jackson shared a memorable encounter with a man on the Isle of Mull who spends an entire week camping just to photograph these elusive creatures.

But Jackson's travels weren't just about the scenery. He emphasized the importance of shedding light on the vibrant communities and cultures that thrive on these islands. "It's very important — people sometimes forget there are people living in these places," he shared. Through his lens, he sought to capture not just landscapes but the essence of island life.

As he continues to document his experiences, Jackson looks forward to a trip to Orkney in the fall, promising "more adventures to come." In a humorous twist, he joked that his travels also grant his wife a reprieve, saying, "She gets rid of me for a week, so that's all good."
