Rumors are swirling across New England after a woman's body was found off a bike path in Springfield, Massachusetts, making her the eighth person discovered dead across three states since March. The internet, of course, has wasted no time leaping to the conclusion that a serial killer is on the loose, but local officials are urging everyone to pump the brakes on the conspiracy theories.

Authorities say the cause of death for the Springfield woman is still unknown, pending an autopsy. Hamden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni made it clear that his office is going all-in on the investigation, but as of now, there's no evidence linking these deaths—which have mostly involved women in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

"Our hearts go out to the families who are grieving," Gulluni said, emphasizing the sensitivity around these losses.

The DA’s office warned that social media rumors are doing no favors for investigators or the public, urging people to avoid spreading unverified drama and misinformation. Gulluni explained, "We are actively working every lead and deploying every available resource. At this time, there is no indication that these incidents are connected to each other or are part of a larger public safety threat."

Meanwhile, survivor stories and warnings to stay vigilant are fueling the fire online, with Facebook groups and Google searches for "New England serial killer" hitting new highs. The Facebook group at the center of the speculation, now cleverly renamed to dodge Facebook's rules, has swelled to over 66,000 members, with 20,000 joining just this month.

Despite the viral panic, Connecticut State Police have echoed the Massachusetts DA’s message: no current evidence suggests a link between the remains found in different states, and no known threat to the general public has emerged.

Authorities are still urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Springfield Police Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355, or text CRIMES (274637), type SOLVE, and send your tip. Their bottom line: justice, support for grieving families, and community safety remain their priorities.

While the story is disturbing and the fears are real, officials are reminding everyone not to let rumors run the show—especially when facts are still coming together.

If there’s one thing scarier than a serial killer, it’s how fast Facebook can whip up a digital manhunt. At this rate, if someone drops a sandwich in a park, we’ll have 50,000 people convinced it’s a serial killer’s calling card before lunch. Seriously, can we get a little less drama and a little more detective work, folks?
