Oklahoma State wrestler Wyatt Hendrickson wins NCAA title, receives support from Donald Trump, discusses Air Force service, and reflects on patriotism and inspiration after his victory.
Wyatt Hendrickson, an Oklahoma State wrestler and newly crowned NCAA champion, shared his thoughts on the support he received from former President Donald Trump during a remarkable weekend. Hendrickson defeated Minnesota’s Gable Steveson to claim the 285-pound title, an upset that captured national attention, and Trump was in the crowd to witness it.
Appearing on Fox News Channel’s "America’s Newsroom," Hendrickson reacted to a clip of Senator Markwayne Mullin discussing the moment. Mullin, who represents Oklahoma, revealed that Trump had specifically stayed to watch Hendrickson, referring to him as his "big guy." The former president was treated to quite the spectacle as Hendrickson not only triumphed but also saluted Trump before draping himself in the American flag. Talk about making a statement.
"That's pretty special," Hendrickson said when asked about Mullin’s comments. "I got to be very honest, but that is very special. You know, when we talk about the final boss, like that is my boss of my boss of my boss. So, having him there to support wrestling and witness my historic moment—it's something I'll remember for the rest of my life."
For Hendrickson, the weekend wasn’t just about his victory on the mat. The young wrestler, who is also a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, spoke passionately about his service and how it shaped his journey. Transferring from the Air Force Academy to Oklahoma State allowed him to finish out his NCAA eligibility at a program that gave him the platform to shine.
"When I was looking at wrestling in college, I wanted to think beyond just the sport," Hendrickson explained to host Bill Hemmer. "I’ve always been super patriotic, and I have a heart to serve. The Air Force Academy was an easy pick for me. Thanks to the Air Force, I’m able to be in grad school and wrestling at Oklahoma State University."
Hendrickson praised the opportunities the Air Force has provided him, calling them "limitless." He added, "This is just a steppingstone. I’ll wrestle for a couple more years, then transition into my role to serve this great country to the best of my ability."
With his championship win and his heartfelt reflections, Hendrickson has quickly become a figure of inspiration. Combining athletic excellence with a dedication to service, he represents the best of what collegiate sports—and perhaps America—can offer.

Hendrickson’s story feels like a movie plot: an Air Force lieutenant, a stunning underdog victory, and a salute to a former president. It’s the kind of narrative that makes wrestling about more than just the sport—it’s a stage for character, patriotism, and pure grit. Also, can we talk about how casually he called Trump 'the final boss'? That’s some A+ millennial energy right there.
