Brief

An Oregon elephant seal pup was stabbed multiple times, prompting NOAA to hunt for a suspect. The seal is recovering, but the incident shocks wildlife advocates.

An elephant seal pup was brutally attacked on an Oregon beach, suffering multiple stab wounds in a disturbing incident that has sparked a manhunt. The assault took place on March 16 in Neskowin, near the Proposal Rock Condominiums, a serene stretch of coastline now tainted by this cruel act. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is leading the search for the perpetrator, releasing a sketch of a suspect described as a White male, roughly 5’10”, with black-and-white hair, a groomed beard, and a noticeable gap between his front teeth.

Despite the vicious attack, the young seal survived. The Marine Stranding Team monitored its recovery, noting that the wounds are healing and the animal, now weighing around 300 pounds, shows no signs of long-term harm. Recently weaned from its mother, the pup was likely learning to hunt on its own before the incident. NOAA relocated the seal to ensure its safety, and it’s expected to eventually return to breeding grounds near Southern California’s Channel Islands.

Investigators are also seeking the owner of a dark blue 1990s Dodge or Chrysler van, described as cluttered with a plastic-covered rear passenger window. A witness reported the suspect wore a black cap featuring an orange excavator logo and the word ‘Timber.’ NOAA emphasizes that harming elephant seals violates the Marine Mammal Protection Act, with penalties including up to $100,000 in fines and a year in jail per violation.

This shocking act of violence against a defenseless creature raises questions about humanity’s respect for wildlife. The NOAA urges anyone with information to come forward to help bring justice for this resilient young seal.

Who stabs a seal pup and thinks they’re the hero of this beach saga? This guy’s out here acting like he’s auditioning for a villain role in a wildlife documentary. With that ‘Timber’ cap and gap-toothed grin, he’s probably hiding in a van that screams ‘I’m up to no good.’ Here’s hoping NOAA catches him before he tries to ‘prune’ more of nature’s finest.
