Pope Francis is steadily recovering from double pneumonia in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, showing gradual improvement while continuing his duties and receiving global prayers and support.
Pope Francis continues to recover steadily one month after being hospitalized for double pneumonia, following complications from bronchitis. According to the Vatican’s Holy See Press Office, his clinical conditions remain stable, with gradual improvements noted in recent days.
While receiving ongoing medical therapy at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, the Pope has managed to stay remarkably productive. This week, he signed off on a three-year reform project aimed at making the Catholic Church more inclusive. He also spent time resting, praying, and following spiritual exercises, including receiving the Eucharist.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been undergoing high-flow oxygen therapy, which is progressively reducing his need for nighttime mechanical ventilation and helping his lungs function better. Motor and respiratory physiotherapy have also been part of his recovery regimen, which has seen encouraging progress.
The Vatican confirmed that Francis is "out of danger of death," though his medical situation remains complex due to his history of lung issues—he had part of his lung removed as a child after a pulmonary infection. A recent chest X-ray confirmed that the infection is clearing, but doctors have recommended he remain hospitalized for further recovery.
This week marked the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis' election as leader of the Roman Catholic Church. To commemorate the milestone, the pontiff received get-well cards and even a celebratory cake. However, his usual Sunday blessings in St. Peter’s Square have been limited to text form during his hospital stay.
The Vatican has decided to provide health updates only when there is significant new information. Sister Anthony, who runs the Vatican switchboard, described the flood of calls from concerned followers as akin to "children waiting to know about their father." Her advice? "Pray for him." It’s touching how deeply people care, isn’t it?
Pope Francis also released an audio message earlier this month, thanking everyone for their prayers and well-wishes. The message was played in St. Peter’s Square, offering a sign of hope amid concerns for his health.

You’ve got to admire the Pope's resilience. Signing off on a major reform project while battling double pneumonia? That’s next-level dedication. But let’s take a moment to appreciate the warmth of Sister Anthony's analogy—it really speaks to the depth of people’s connection to him.
