Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, blends Pope Francis’ inclusive vision with traditional Catholic roots in his debut address.
In a vibrant display of faith and tradition, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, greeted the world from St. Peter’s Square on Thursday, blending the inclusive spirit of his predecessor, Pope Francis, with a nod to time-honored Catholic customs. Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, the new pope delivered a succinct address in Italian and Spanish, emphasizing a synodal church that walks together in peace, charity, and closeness to the suffering.
"His call for a missionary church echoes Pope Francis’ vision of unity and outreach," noted Dennis Doyle, a retired professor from the University of Dayton. Yet, unlike Francis, who shunned ornate vestments in 2013, Leo XIV donned the traditional red mozzetta and white cassock, signaling a return to some ceremonial roots. "He’s hinting at a balance—progressive yet traditional," Doyle observed.
Leo XIV’s choice of name invokes Pope Leo XIII, whose 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum tackled the industrial era’s labor struggles and condemned socialism while defending property rights. This historical nod suggests the new pope may address modern economic divides with a similar moral clarity. His background as a cardinal, ordained in 1982, and former head of the Augustinian Province of Chicago, underscores his deep ties to both American and global Catholic communities.
While his inclusive tone has sparked unease among some ‘America First’ advocates, Leo XIV’s early moves—blending Francis’ synodality with traditional flair—hint at a papacy that could bridge divides. Will he reside in the Apostolic Palace, unlike Francis? Only time will tell.

Pope Leo XIV’s balancing act—Francis’ heart with a traditionalist’s wardrobe—feels like a Chicago hot dog with all the toppings: bold, messy, but somehow it works! Wonder if he’ll trade the papal tiara for a Cubs cap next.
