A tragic fire at Pulse nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, killed 51 and injured over 100 during a concert. Investigations focus on safety measures and accountability.
A devastating fire ripped through the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, in the early hours of Sunday, killing 51 people and injuring more than 100 others, according to authorities. The tragedy unfolded during a concert by a local pop group, when pyrotechnic devices sparked a blaze around 2:35 a.m., Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski confirmed to reporters.
"Sparks caused fire … and fire spread through the discotheque," Toshkovski explained, shedding light on the harrowing sequence of events.
As flames engulfed the single-story building—which was previously a carpet warehouse—the roof partially collapsed, leaving behind a gutted shell. Many of the injured suffered severe burns and were rushed to hospitals across the country. Health Minister Arben Taravari stated that 118 people were hospitalized, adding, "All our capabilities have been put to use, in a maximum effort to save as many lives as possible of the young people involved in this tragedy." Neighboring countries Albania, Bulgaria, and Greece have offered assistance.
Local media reported that the nightclub had been operating for several years in the converted warehouse, raising questions about safety measures. Authorities have already arrested one individual in connection with the incident, and Toshkovski promised that investigations into licensing and safety protocols would follow. He emphasized the government’s "moral responsibility" to hold any wrongdoers accountable.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed his sorrow on social media platform X, writing, "This is a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia. The loss of so many young lives is irreparable, and the pain of the families, loved ones and friends is immeasurable." He pledged that the government would do everything possible to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
Police have cordoned off the area as investigators comb through the wreckage for evidence. The tragedy has gripped the nation, with many questioning how such a disaster could have occurred in a venue hosting hundreds of young people.

It’s hard not to feel anger alongside the sadness here. Pyrotechnics in a packed nightclub? Really? This sounds like a recipe for disaster that never should’ve gotten past a basic risk assessment. And let’s not overlook the fact that this building was apparently an old carpet warehouse. If ever there were a metaphor for neglect, it’s turning a room full of flammable materials into a hotspot for a crowd. Here’s hoping the investigations lead to real accountability—not just another round of finger-pointing.
