Tragic Loss: Father and Son Drown in Lake Michigan During Family Boating Trip

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded over the weekend on Lake Michigan, where a father and son lost their lives during what was meant to be a joyful family boating trip. David Meneou, 65, of Joliet, Illinois, and his 20-year-old son, Jameson Meneou, of Lockport, Illinois, drowned in a devastating turn of events near Dune Acres, Indiana.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon around 4:20 p.m. when conservation officers responded to a distress call for an active water rescue. A preliminary investigation revealed that Jameson, who had autism, ventured into deep water while playing catch with his father—a favorite bonding activity for the pair. As Jameson began to struggle, David heroically attempted to save his son but soon found himself in distress as well.

A family’s love turned to loss: Candace Keller Meneou, David’s wife and Jameson’s mother, shared that boating was a cherished pastime for the duo. Jameson, unable to drive a car, found freedom and joy in piloting a boat alongside his father. Their game of catch, a simple moment of connection, took a tragic turn when the ball went too far into the lake.

By the time officials arrived, a good Samaritan had pulled both men from the water in a remote area accessible only by off-road vehicles. Conservation officers and National Park rangers performed CPR while transporting them by boat to the Port of Indiana. Despite these efforts, both father and son were pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The investigation into their deaths remains ongoing.
