Donald Trump dismisses third-term rumors, talks MAGA succession, and doubles down on immigration emergency in a candid interview.
Donald Trump has officially squashed those persistent rumors about him aiming for a third term as president. In a sit-down with NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Trump told host Kristen Welker that running for a third term just isn't on his radar.
When asked about the possibility, Trump replied, "So many people want me to do it." He added, "It’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do. I don’t know if that’s constitutional. But this is not something I’m looking to do." Well, at least the Constitution can sleep easy tonight.
The conversation then turned to the future of the MAGA movement. Trump dropped a few names, mentioning Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential torchbearers. "There’s a lot of them that are great," he said, highlighting unity among his allies. He also hinted that the VP role gives someone a bit of a head start in the succession race.
The interview didn't stop at political rumors. Trump doubled down on his hardline immigration stance, stating he has no intention of ending his emergency declaration. "We have an emergency. We have a massive emergency overall," he emphasized, drawing a clear line that the border is still very much on his mind.
Trump's administration claims illegal border crossings have dropped by 96% compared to Joe Biden's time in office, though his deportation efforts are running into legal challenges. As Trump put it, "The border now is not the emergency. The border is — it’s all part of the same thing though. The big emergency right now is that we have thousands of people that we want to take out, and we have some judges that want everybody to go to court."
Just before his 100th day in office, the White House announced 139,000 deportations since Trump’s inauguration. That’s a number that’s big even by Trump standards, and you know he loves big numbers.
