However, Medicaid provisions within the bill sparked heated debate in Congress. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the measure, arguing it safeguards Medicaid for the truly needy—pregnant women, children, and the disabled—while ensuring able-bodied recipients contribute through work or volunteering.

Leavitt also highlighted that the bill targets "waste, fraud, and abuse," with plans to remove approximately 1.4 million illegal immigrants from the program.
