Ukrainian President Zelenskyy claims Russian leader Putin will die soon due to poor health, fueling speculation, amid ongoing Russia-Ukraine ceasefire talks and Western diplomatic pressures.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has delivered a jaw-dropping forecast, claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin "will die soon" due to deteriorating health. This bombshell prediction was made during an interview in Paris on Wednesday.

"He will die soon, that is a fact, and everything will be over," Zelenskyy told Eurovision News, as translated by the Kyiv Independent. While he didn’t elaborate on specific health issues, Zelenskyy hinted at Putin's determination to cling to power and engage in direct confrontation with the West.

The comments add fuel to persistent rumors about Putin’s health, which have intensified since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Speculation includes alleged cancer treatment, strokes, and Parkinson’s disease. In October, video footage showing what appeared to be IV marks on Putin’s hands further stoked the rumor mill, though the Kremlin has repeatedly denied all claims about the leader's ill health.

Zelenskyy’s remarks come at a pivotal moment, as Russian and Ukrainian delegations recently agreed to a ceasefire on energy infrastructure attacks and hostilities in the Black Sea, following talks in Saudi Arabia. However, the Kremlin has tied the ceasefire’s implementation to the removal of Western sanctions on Russia's Rosselkhozbank and restored access to the global banking system.

In his interview, Zelenskyy urged the U.S. not to yield to Kremlin demands amidst ongoing negotiations. He expressed concern about America potentially easing Russia's isolation, stating, "It is very important that America does not help Putin to get out of this global isolation now. This is one of the most dangerous moments."

The Ukrainian leader also met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday ahead of a Paris summit with representatives from 30 nations. Discussions centered on strengthening Kyiv’s military and exploring the possibility of deploying European troops as part of any future peace deal.

Putin, who has served as Russia's president since 2012 (and previously from 2000 to 2008), has long been a dominant force in global politics. The former KGB officer also held the position of prime minister twice, from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012.

Zelenskyy’s bold claim about Putin’s impending demise is a headline-grabber, but it’s certainly not backed by hard evidence. Whether this is strategic rhetoric or a personal belief, it’s clear Zelenskyy is playing the long game in keeping global pressure on Russia. On another note, the Kremlin’s rumored IV marks drama feels like the stuff of spy novels—can anyone say 'cloak and dagger'? Fascinating times.
