He accused former President Donald Trump’s tariffs of being a "betrayal" and warned that America’s ambitions toward Canada are anything but friendly. "America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never ... ever happen," Carney declared, channeling his inner action hero.

Poilievre’s loss is a dramatic reversal of fortune. Not long ago, he was the odds-on favorite to replace outgoing Liberal PM Justin Trudeau, especially as Trudeau’s popularity nosedived. Early polls in late 2024 even had Poilievre leading Trudeau by a whopping 25 points. But then, Trump’s comments about making Canada the 51st state seemed to ignite a wildfire, shifting momentum behind Carney and the Liberals.
