Pierre Poilievre, Canada's Conservative leader, is projected to lose his seat after 20 years, as Liberals surge and Trump’s comments shake up the election.

Pierre Poilievre, the long-standing Conservative heavyweight in Canadian politics, is facing the shock of his career after projections show he’s set to lose his parliamentary seat of over two decades to Liberal challenger Bruce Fanjoy.

This stunning electoral twist was called early Tuesday morning, following Monday’s federal election. The counting of special ballots is currently on hold, so nobody’s popping champagne just yet over whether Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals will be running the show with a minority or majority government.

Fanjoy, who looks poised to unseat Poilievre, comes with a background in business and marketing and apparently lives in a carbon-neutral house in Manotick, Ottawa. Honestly, if winning elections required eco-friendly housing, half of Parliament would be living in treehouses by now.

"We have to look out for ourselves, and we have to take care of each other. Let’s get to work," Fanjoy posted on X, sounding ready to roll up his sleeves.

Meanwhile, Carney’s victory speech wasted no time in throwing a little shade south of the border. He accused former President Donald Trump’s tariffs of being a "betrayal" and warned that America’s ambitions toward Canada are anything but friendly. "America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never ... ever happen," Carney declared, channeling his inner action hero.

Poilievre’s loss is a dramatic reversal of fortune. Not long ago, he was the odds-on favorite to replace outgoing Liberal PM Justin Trudeau, especially as Trudeau’s popularity nosedived. Early polls in late 2024 even had Poilievre leading Trudeau by a whopping 25 points. But then, Trump’s comments about making Canada the 51st state seemed to ignite a wildfire, shifting momentum behind Carney and the Liberals. It’s wild how U.S. politics can end up being the ultimate plot twist in a Canadian election.

Poilievre losing his seat is like watching the Titanic sink—slow-motion disbelief, but you can’t look away. And who knew Trump could shake up a Canadian election from across the border? Someone get this guy a passport—and maybe a map.
