A Florida man is facing a laundry list of charges after authorities say he boarded an Amtrak train in New Jersey with what they’re calling a "small arsenal" of deadly weapons, including assault rifles, high-capacity magazines, handguns, silencers, and even a booby-trapped gun.
Jeffrey O. Kennerk, 34, from Fort Lauderdale, was arrested at the Trenton Transit Center back in January, but the details were made public by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin this week. Officials say Kennerk brought the weapons onboard after leaving a zebra-print suitcase (yes, zebra-print) packed with firearms and ammunition in the busy concourse at Newark Penn Station. The bag was discovered by a sharp-eyed New Jersey Transit Police officer, who found a loaded handgun, assault-rifle magazines, and boxes of ammo inside. Turns out, the suitcase was the least subtle thing in this whole operation.
Digging deeper, officers found a loaded AK-47-style rifle and even more fully loaded magazines hidden in a second compartment of the bag. According to authorities, Kennerk briefly left the suitcase to snag a train ticket to Virginia, then hopped on the train in Newark, only to be intercepted by law enforcement at the very next stop in Trenton. Not exactly a criminal mastermind’s escape route.
Upon his arrest, police say they discovered even more firepower: an AR-15-style rifle (broken down into pieces), multiple handguns, extra magazines, and yet another rifle chambered in .300 AAC Blackout. In a particularly alarming twist, officers say one of the weapons was rigged to fire without a trigger pull—making it a booby trap that could have endangered anyone handling the bag.
Investigators also recovered four silencers and hollow-point ammunition in both 9mm and .22 calibers. Authorities described Kennerk’s haul as enough to cause "widespread injury or damage" if things had gone sideways.
Kennerk has now been indicted on a slew of charges, including possession of weapons for unlawful purposes, multiple counts of unlawful possession of various firearms and assault weapons, aggravated assault, and several fourth-degree crimes like possession of large-capacity magazines, silencers, and hollow-nose ammunition. Endangering the public is also on the list.
New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin praised law enforcement for their quick action, emphasizing that the public dodged a major bullet—literally and figuratively—thanks to their vigilance. Fox News Digital reached out to both Platkin’s office and Kennerk’s attorney for comment.
